9 Mental Health Reminders You Probably Need to Hear

I don’t know about you, but sometimes I feel like life is crazy and chaotic and out of control and when that happens, it’s really hard for me to separate and organize the thoughts in my head. The truth starts to get drowned out by the chaos and worry and overwhelmingness of life and I tend to lose sight of any balance my mind once had. My mind feels cluttered and confused and it usually gets to a point where I can’t even hear myself think anymore. 

Usually, the thing that pulls me out of this mind trap is simple. I’ll see a quote on Pinterest, or I’ll hear someone say something that resonates with me, and kind of wakes me up to reality. I love these moments because I feel like it’s just a little reminder from God saying ‘hey, keep going, you can do this.’

I try to keep these reminders taped to the front of my mind just in case those chaotic moments come around and I’m in need of some comfort or inspiration. I thought maybe you could benefit from these reminders too, so I made a collection of as many as I could think of and put them into one post for you!

I think sometimes when we lose perspective, it’s nice to just have a little guidance that can help us get back up again. So today, I just want to remind you of a few things: 

You are not alone. 

This is something all of us have heard time and time again, but take a second and really think about it. 

Even though we live in an age where there is a growing awareness of mental health and these issues are becoming more commonly talked about, it can still feel sometimes like we are going through things alone. 

I’m here to remind you that you are not alone. 

I promise you, whatever it is that you’re going through or experiencing (anxiety, depression, a break up, loss of a loved one, abuse, uncertainty about who you are, physical health issues, suicidal thoughts, rejection, ADHD, poverty, job loss, or anything else) there are tons of other people out there who are going through the exact same thing. 

I think that’s oddly comforting. 

For me, it reminds me that I’m not just out here trying to figure out things on my own and that many other people have gone through this and have come out on the other side. 

It reminds me that nothing is impossible to get through. 

I encourage you to find ways you can see reminders of this daily. 

Find someone to talk to that knows what you’re going through. Or even just find a page on Instagram that shares information about that particular topic. For example, I follow a page that shares facts and tips about social anxiety. While it’s something so small, it feels so comforting to see a post from them and just feel understood. 

You are not defined by what you’re going through. 

You are not your anxiety. You are not your depression. 

You are not defined by the experiences you’ve had to face. 

If you’ve experienced rejection, that doesn’t make you unworthy. 

If you have been abused, that doesn’t mean that you’re not deserving of being treated better. 

No matter what you’ve been through or experienced, you are deserving of love. You are worthy and you can find happiness and joy and have a life you love. 

Don’t let the past define your future. 

You can get through this. 

If you’re going through a hard time or your mental health isn’t at 100%, it’s easy to feel hopeless and honestly just unconvinced that you’ll ever see the light at the end of the tunnel. 

But even though the sky looks a little cloudier right now doesn’t mean that the sun won’t eventually shine through. 

This thing you’re going through that seems so big and overwhelming right now, one day you’ll look back and it will be just a memory. 

You are going to get through this. 

You are going to come out on the other side stronger and better. 

You are stronger than you think. 

It’s really easy to downplay our own strength. Especially if it feels like life is kicking our butt lately. 

But just because you don’t see your strength doesn’t mean it isn’t there. Deep inside you is a fighter, and she is stronger than you realize. 

If you’re feeling tired and depleted, it’s okay to rest. 

But don’t confuse that exhaustion for weakness. You are strong and powerful and you have what it takes to get through this. 

You are here for a reason. 

If you’re feeling really low, it may feel like there is no point in your life. 

If you’re going through a period where you feel like you are a mistake or worthless or unwanted, let me remind you of this: you are here for a reason. 

Each and every one of us is here for a reason. 

If you haven’t found that reason yet, don’t give up. 

You were created for a purpose. Don’t let anyone (including your own mind) tell you differently. 

It’s okay not to be perfect. 

In fact, you’ll never be perfect. No one will. 

Living by the standard of perfection will only make you feel inadequate and like you aren’t measuring up. 

No one and I mean no one, (no matter how they may make it seem on social media) has a perfect life. 

For the most part, all of us are just spending our days trying to survive, trying to figure out life. 

Each of us has our own set of worries and shortcomings and issues that we are working through. 

Trust me, I know how easy it is to look at the world around me or see what my friends post on Instagram, and immediately feel like I’m failing in some way because my life isn’t that ‘perfect’. 

If you’re feeling this way, I want to remind you that you do not have to be perfect. 

Embrace the imperfectness of your life. It is beautiful. Embrace the mess, the chaos, embrace every moment. 

No one will ever be perfect, so don’t let the pressure of perfection be the thing that weighs you down. 

Any amount of progress is still progress. 

I have spent a lot of time with an ‘all or nothing’ attitude. I’ve wasted so many years giving up on goals and habits because I feel like if I don’t execute them 100% perfectly, I’m failing. 

Lately, though, life has been teaching me that progress is still progress. 

If I’m trying to be more healthy, drinking an extra glass of water one day is still progress, even if I eat junk food for every meal. 

If I’m trying to develop better habits, making my bed one morning (which I don’t usually do) is still progress, even if I don’t do any of the other habits I intended to do. 

Every tiny step I take toward bettering myself is progress, because it is moving me in the right direction. 

So many of us have developed this idea that if we aren’t doing everything we could be doing, we are failing and there is no point in trying. 

If you’re feeling like the ‘all or nothing’ attitude is holding you back, let me tell ya something: ‘all or nothing’ is a bunch of garbage. 

Progress is still progress, no matter how big or small. If you’re depressed, getting out of bed in the morning can be progress. If you’re trying to save money, saving your first quarter can be progress. 

Don’t neglect giving yourself credit for the amazing things you’ve done. 

People care about you. 

Sometimes it feels like the world is crashing in on you, and there is no one there to help you hold it all together. 

It can feel like no one cares, like no one would even miss you if you were gone. 

If you’re reading this, I promise you that there are people out there who love and care about you. 

Even if it feels untrue right now, I promise there are so many people who would miss you if you weren’t here. 

And there are people who want to help you go through what you’re facing right now. 

Sometimes when we’re facing challenges, our minds kind of isolate us, which can make us feel alone and unloved. 

But just know that sometimes what our minds lead us to believe is very different from the truth. 

If your mind is telling you that no one loves you or cares about you, don’t believe it. 

There is nothing wrong with you. 

Even though struggling with mental health is a pretty common thing, it’s still extremely easy to feel like something is ‘wrong’ with us when we feel certain ways. 

No matter what you are struggling with or going through, I want to remind you that there is nothing wrong with you. 

You are not weird or broken or damaged goods. You are not less than anyone else. 

You are not experiencing depression because there is something wrong with you. 

You having ADHD doesn’t mean something is wrong with you. 

Something traumatic and awful did not happen to you because there is something wrong with you. 

These issues can affect anyone. You are a whole, amazing and beautiful person. Whatever you’re facing, don’t let it make you feel like there is something wrong with you. 

I hope these reminders are helpful and comforting to you. I know sometimes our minds can convince us that everything is falling apart and like we’ll never be happy again. When those types of thoughts come along, I hope you’ll come back to these reminders and find some comfort and strength in each word.

In writing this post, I’ve realized that sometimes the mental health journey can feel very lonely and difficult. I had the idea of creating a ‘group’ of sorts that people can join, and we can all come together to help each other on our own journeys. 

We can share tips we’ve learned, share progress we’ve made, we can let it be an outlet for those who need someone to talk to, etc. Overall, I just imagine this being a group of people who are supporting each other in a judgement-free place. This could include a space online where we could chat with each other, along with mental health resources such as digital products, etc.
