1. Enjoy your morning routine in low light
Avoiding the big lights is beneficial year-round, but there’s just something extra cozy about it when the weather is chilly.
As you go about your morning tasks, try doing as much as possible without turning on the overhead lights.
This might mean skincare by candlelight, or making your morning coffee with only the countertop lamps on, or even letting the only light in your home be the light from outside (if your morning routine is being done a little later in the morning).
Keeping the lights low gives a ‘slow’ and ‘peaceful’ vibe to your whole morning routine, and can keep you from feeling immediately overstimulated.
If you’re needing more ‘low light’ options in your home, here a few of my favorite small lamps with cozy & calm vibes:
2. Read a chapter of your favorite book
Winter calls for slower and more ‘ease into it’ type mornings.
That means taking your time as you go, and making the most of your mornings. This = the perfect opportunity to cozy up in your favorite chair and crack open a good book.
As I mentioned in the last section, it’s good to keep our brains from being overstimulated as soon as we wake up. Things like scrolling through social media, or immediately consulting our to-do lists and stressing about the day ahead are a quick way to stress out brains out.
So what if instead of doing those things, we let our brains wake up slowly and gracefully? What if the first things our brains do each morning is practice creativity or explore far away lands or get to laugh or feel deeply or be inspired? All of this is possibly with reading.
If you’re going to read in the mornings, at least with a cozy approach, I recommend fiction.
It’s a little softer, and isn’t immediately putting us into action mode, like a self-development book would.
And PLEASE tell me below in the comments- what is your go-to cozy book? I want alllll the recommendations.
3. Do 2 minutes of gentle stretching
I don’t know about you, but my body tends to get a little less limber in the winter. My joints are more sore, my muscles are tighter, and just overall I don’t feel as loosey goosey. You feel that way too?
That’s why a morning stretch is so important.
Even 2 minutes of gentle stretching (in low light of course) can do wonders for our physical health and how we feel throughout the day.
So when you wake up this winter, try to spend a few minutes gently stretching and getting your body prepared for the cozy day ahead.
4. Make a yummy breakfast that you love.
A winter morning routine is all about comfort, and not much is more comforting than a warm and yummy breakfast.
Taking the time in the morning to be intentional with something like breakfast is a great way to slow down and be in the moment.
Plus, winter is the perfect time to try out some seasonal recipes. And warm foods (think french toast, oatmeal with seasonal fruit, etc.) are so cozy.
Also super cozy? A delicious morning beverage. Add in those winter-y feeling spices and flavors for a little extra hug.
5. Practice some self care
Winter is a hard time for many people. Whether it’s Seasonal Affective Disorder, or struggling with the holidays, or any other number of things that tend to flare up in the winter, a little self care might be needed.
A winter morning routine is the perfect area to add some self care.
Take a long warm shower or bath, or take 5 minutes to journal and reflect. Go for a walk outside, or do a facial. Or practice a cozy hobby if you have time.
Making self care a part of your morning routine will do wonders for your mental health this winter.
Having a go-to winter morning routine is such a fun and simple way to make the winter truly cozy and joyful.
Most of us could use a little boost in the winter, and this a great way to get it.
