8 ways to make your home feel fresh for spring

As the flowers begin to bloom, and days start to get warmer, and everything starts to look brighter, the urge to shed off our theoretical winter coats and get a fresh start becomes overwhelming. And while the outside world around us may be welcoming spring, our indoor spaces might need a little push.

So how do we make our homes feel fresh for spring? How do we bring that sense of renewal and joy indoors?

Below, I’m going to outline 8 ways that you can bring freshness to your home for free!

1. Start with a mood board.

First things first, let’s visualize how you want your home to look and, most importantly, feel this season. This is where a mood board comes in handy.

If you’re unfamiliar, mood boards are essentially a collection of content (most often photos) that show the kind of mood you’re going for with a given project or season or design. For example, here is my ‘Fresh Spring Home’ mood board.

To create your own mood board, you can find images online using sources like Pinterest, and just fill the board with things that give you the vibe you’re wanting to go for.

2. Do a deep clean to freshen your home.

We’ve all heard of spring cleaning, but the notion didn’t start just because people enjoy cleaning in March. With spring comes a feeling of renewal and new beginnings.

Bringing that feeling indoors by giving your home a renewal is such a great way to welcome the season.

Spring cleaning lists are usually full of all the things that don’t get done very often throughout the year- cleaning windows, changing filters, cleaning under and behind furniture, etc. But mainly, it’s about making your home feel fresh and clean right down to its very bases.

I’ve created a whole blog post for you about spring cleaning which includes a whole giant list of things to tidy & declutter. This is the ultimate guide to spring cleaning. You can read that post here ↓

3. Adjust the ‘vibes’ of your home.

If you’re one of those people (guilty) who tries to make your home dark and warm in the winter, then you might need to do a vibe check when spring rolls around.

Making subtle changes to decor like switching out dark bedding for a lighter colored comforter or changing your dark green door wreath for something brighter can do wonders for the way your home feels.

If you’re not a seasonal decorator, you can still do things to change the overall vibe. We’ll talk more about that below.

4. Rearrange to make your home feel fresh.

I truly feel that nothing makes a home feel so suddenly different and newer than rearranging furniture. If your home allows, try to switch things up a bit.

The perfect time to do this is when you’re spring cleaning when you might already be moving furniture to clean behind/under it.

You don’t have to completely rearrange your whole house to reap the benefits of this- even moving things slightly, like moving a houseplant to a different corner, or changing the orientation of your dining table can make a huge difference.

5. Make your home feel fresh by bringing in actual freshness.

During spring, the world around you is changing, waking up, blooming. Why not bring some of that inside? Here are a few ways to do that:

  • Fresh flowers. Fake flowers might last longer, but they just don’t have the same effect. If you don’t have the budget to buy fresh flowers, take a walk outside and see if you can find any to pick!
  • Houseplants. Spring is the perfect time to develop your green thumb, and house plants are a great way to start. Bringing in some greenery can help purify the air in your home, boost mental health, and also adds to the overall ‘fresh’ aesthetic.
  • An indoor herb garden. Herbs are a great thing to grow indoors, and are typically easier to manage than other garden items. Having a little windowsill herb garden can bring some freshness into your home and also give you a little boost when preparing fresh meals this season!
  • Fresh air. Open your windows, all of them, and let your home breathe for what is probably the first time in several months. If possible, keep them open for at least a full day to make sure everything gets really aired out.

6. Make your home smell fresh.

After winter our homes can often feel and smell stale.

For months, the windows have been shut and all of the smells have stayed trapped inside. This can cause things to feel… unfresh to say the least.

If you want to let go of those bad smells and help your home feel fresh, there are several options.

In addition to opening your windows and letting everything air out, here are some ways you can make your home smell its freshest this spring:

  • Potpourri. Potpourri is generally thought of as a winter/holiday thing, but spring is the perfect time to use it. You can buy potpourri pre-made, or make your own using ingredients like citrus such as lemons, grapefruits, or oranges, herbs such as mint or rosemary, flowers, vanilla, berries, and more. There are countless potpourri recipes online that can be made easily!
  • Essential oils. If you’re looking for a natural way to make your home smell fresh, essential oils can be a great option. Whether you’re cleaning with essential oils or diffusing them, the smells can be light and fresh! Just be sure to use oils that are safe for everyone in your house- some oils can have negative effects on pets.
  • Freshen up your fabrics. One of the biggest causes of lingering smells in a home is the odors being trapped in fabrics- on your couch, blankets, rugs, carpet, pillows, etc. If you are lighting candles and diffusing oils and your home is still smelling stale, your fabrics could be to blame. Solution? Give them a good clean. Wash anything that can fit in the washer, including pillows. Then use a handheld carpet cleaner (this one is my favorite) on furniture, rugs, stairs, etc. If you want to take it a step further, deep clean your vacuum and change its filters to avoid any of that ‘vacuum smell’ that sometimes happens.
  • Candles & wax. Candles are typically the go-to for making a home smell good, but there is something to keep in mind with them. If you are aiming for making your home fresh and natural, then the kind of candle you use matters a lot. Typical storebought candles (like those from Bath & Body) can actually put toxins and pollutants into the air. I learned this after seeing my air purifier show critical air quality levels anytime I lit a B&B candle. If you’re buying candles, choose soy or beeswax as these are more natural and non-toxic.

7. Switch out your winter items for spring ones.

As the weather starts to get a little bit warmer, a lot of the things about our routines change.

Early spring is the perfect time to start making things easier for ourselves as those routines evolve. Here are some ways you can get your space ready for the spring ahead:

  • Bring out your warmer weather clothing and have it ready to go, and put away any winter clothing that is no longer needed.
  • Organize your kitchen for spring cooking. In our family, winter is full of crockpot meals, while the warmer seasons see more fresh meals. At the end of winter, we usually put the crockpot away because we know we won’t be using it much until the fall, and we bring out things like serving bowls, extra cutting boards, salad spinners, etc. If your springtime cooking habits seem to differ from your winter ones, set yourself up for success by organizing it now.
  • Switch out linens & bedding. As the months get warmer, the fabrics of choice often get lighter. This might mean thinner blankets on the bed, or switching from a chunky knit blanket on the couch to a thin muslin one. Go ahead and swap these types of things out throughout your home so that when the time comes to reach for a blanket, you have what you need.

8. Enjoy your fresh home throughout spring.

This one isn’t necessarily about your home directly, but rather how you use your home.

Part of spring’s fresh feeling is that it allows us to feel fresh and new too. Embrace this.

Make it a priority to start your day enjoying some time in a cozy part of your home. Make this your area.

It could be a cozy spot on the front porch, or sitting at your dining table watching the sun rise, or reading a book in your favorite chair.

A fresh & cozy home won’t mean anything if we aren’t able to enjoy it- so enjoy it.
