Have you been wanting to improve your overall wellbeing but feeling overwhelmed by all of the advice online? Not to mention all of those unrealistic healthy morning routine videos we all see on Instagram.
Sometimes the noise of it all is just too much.
It can feel like attaining a healthy and well-balanced life is like a puzzle that none of us have the right pieces for. And if we have all the right puzzle pieces, we may not have the energy or the motivation to put them all together.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by all of the advice out there about creating a better life, take a deep breath. It’s going to be okay.
The older I get, the more I learn that life doesn’t need to be as complicated as most of us make it.
We don’t have to take extravagant things to make progress. It doesn’t take huge leaps to get closer to our goals. We can do simple things. Baby step things.
So if you’re feeling bogged down by all of the endless (and conflicting) advice on the internet, let this be your grounding space.
If you simply want to make your life 1% better each day, here are some easy and completely doable habits to try out for a healthy morning routine.

Simple habits to improve your physical health
Improving your physical health can feel so daunting. It often seems like we need to exercise until we’re depleted, or eat a boringly healthy diet in order to make progress. But physical wellbeing can be achieved by taking small steps and doing little things that compound over time. Here are a few simple things you can do each morning for your physical health:
Stretch for 5 minutes
Take a few minutes each morning and just streeeeetch your body. Our bodies go through so much throughout each day, so taking the time early to get prepared for that is important.
Get 10-15 minutes of physical activity
Physical activity is great for our bodies, but it doesn’t have to be as intense as you may think. You don’t have to be a marathon runner to benefit from some movement.
Go for a short walk around the block, or take your dog to a dog park and play with them. Dance in your living room. Do a 10 minute beginner’s yoga video on YouTube. Just get some movement!
Drink a big glass of water
Starting your day with hydration is going to benefit you so much. Our bodies need water for like…. everything. And starting your day by drinking water can make it easier to keep drinking water throughout the day.
Pro tip: the cup does make a difference. Find a cup you truly enjoy drinking from. Here’s my pick!
Start your day with protein
Consuming protein in the morning has been shown to boost mood and energy levels, reduce cravings throughout the day, improve things like focus and concentration, and boost metabolism.
And eating protein doesn’t mean you have to cook a whole buffet of foods. Grab some Greek yogurt or oatmeal with fruit, or blend up a smoothie with some protein powder. Or even just keep protein bars on hand. Do what works for you!
Take vitamins
Taking vitamins each day obviously serves our bodies well. But still a lot of adults skip this step. If you aren’t 100% sure that your body is getting everything it needs from your normal diet, then you could be missing out on some important nutrients.
And being deficient in even simple vitamins can cause our bodies (and brains) issues that we may not realize. So at the very least, taking a multi-vitamin each morning is a step in the right direction for your health!
Simple habits to improve your mental health
We’re all in need of some mental health improvements, and a morning routine is the perfect place to work on that. Taking a few moments each morning to figure out how to set your mind up for a good day can make a world of difference in how that day goes. Here are a few healthy morning routine habits that improve your mental health:
Do something creative
Practicing creativity in the morning is a huuuuuge boost for our brains. Taking even just a few minutes to do something creative before your day begins can help boost your mood and focus throughout the day, and shifts you to a more positive mindset.
There are so many simple ways to practice creativity. Journal or do some guided writing prompts. Take out your phone or camera and take some photos of things around your house. Sketch a little. Practice music.
A lot of people (including me) feel their most creative early in the morning (after the initial brain fog has worn off of course). So why not try it out and see if it can benefit you?
Do a brain dump
A brain dump is exactly what it sounds like- dumping out your brain. Stress is inevitable in life, and most of us wake up already stressed for the day.
BUT we don’t have to carry that stress into the day.
Take a few minutes in the morning to clear out those thoughts and feel more collected for the day ahead.
Do something to boost your confidence
If you want to go into the day feeling in a good mental headspace, try boosting your confidence early.
This might look like wearing an outfit that you feel so good in, or having your hair or makeup styled in a certain way.
You can also get a confidence boost by writing yourself a love note on the mirror, or jotting down 5 things you love abour yourself.
Simply put- do something that makes you feel really good.
Practice self care
We all need more self care, so why not add some to your morning routine?
Morning self care can be simple. Take a long shower. Sit and reflect for 5 minutes. Read a positive-mindset mantra. Or use some self care journal prompts to truly connect with yourself.

Put away your phone
Our brains are so overstimulated with daily life as it is. If we start our day with that stimulation, we are never giving our brains a break.
One of the most beneficial things you can do for your mental health is to go screen-free for a few hours each day or week. A screen-free morning routine takes this goal and makes it even better.
It will help you wake up slower, be more present, and avoid the overstimulation for as long as possible. Trust me- your brain will thank you.
Simple habits to improve your spiritual health
Whether you’re a religious person, or just want to connect on a deeper level with the world around you, taking time each morning for this area of your life is going to help you gain that deeper connection. These habits are all about slowing down, being present, and reflecting.
Here are a few ways you can improve your spiritual health:
Spend time reflecting & journaling
Getting to know ourselves, the world around us, and the things we care about can become much easier once we start to truly reflect.
Grab a notebook or even just sit down with your eyes closed, and look inward.
Think about how you’re feeling, what’s been happening in life lately, how it relates to whatever it is you believe, and how you want things to look going forward.
Knowing ourselves can help us improve our spiritual health in so many ways.
Do a bible study or devotional
If your faith is something important to you, taking time each morning to focus on that can be a great way to grow in your relationship with God.
Even spending 5 minutes reading a devotional or a chapter of the bible is a great step towards spiritual wellbeing.

Spend 10 minutes in nature, taking it all in
No matter your beliefs, most people can agree that we have some sort of connection with nature. And spending time out in that nature can help us connect on a deeper level to ourselves and the world around us.
If you can, spend a few minutes outside just taking it in. No phones, no distractions, just you and nature.
Try to take notice of things you wouldn’t normally pay attention to. The way the wind blows, the wildlife, the views and beauty around you.
How to use these habits to build your morning routine
When you’re building a healthy morning routine, it’s important to be realistic and mindful of what your limits are.
How much time do you have each morning? How much energy or motivation do you normally wake up with?
I talk a lot about setting up a morning routine for different energy & motivation levels in this blog post: How to Design a Morning Routine that Matches Your Motivation (and Actually Lasts)
Using this information, you can start to build your healthy morning routine with some of the habits above.
First let’s look at your time limit.
If you have, for example, 30 minutes to devote to healthy habits each morning, then try dedicated 10 minutes to each of the three health areas above.
Example:
5 minutes of stretching + 5 minutes of eating a healthy breakfast (physical health).
5 minute brain dump + 5 minutes of creativity time (mental health)
10 minutes of sitting outside watching the sunrise & taking it all in (spiritual health)
Creating a combination of habits that impact different areas of health and wellbeing is a good way to take a well-rounded approach to your morning routine.
Keep these habits on hand and each morning, pick one or two from each section to do as a part of your healthy morning routine.

Creating a healthy morning routine that can improve your wellbeing in multiple areas of life is important.
By following the tips above, and picking habits that are both doable and beneficial to you, you will be on your way to creating a healthier and happier life!
